I havent scrapbooked in ages, so I dug out one of my old scrapbooks since I was thinking of my kids...
Above: I made these scrapbook pages when my daughter graduated 8th grade. Her birthday party that year was Hawaiian themed, so thats the pattern I chose for the background paper. On the left, I added words that described her or things that were important in her life at the time. On the right, I started with pictures of her when she was little and progressed in age and important events. Then I added some tags, b-day cake picture, and some keepsakes.

I couldnt believe it when I found a picture of dad and noticed the similarities to my sons school picture for that year. It was uncanny (my kids think its really creepy), but I couldnt resist scrapbooking it . When I showed my mom, she asked when my son had his potrait taken & it was actually a portrait of my hubby when he was little:)

This was a good time ...the Harry Potter book parties at Barnes and Noble! We always looked forward to these. I started reading the books to my kids while I was in college ( yes, I was a late bloomer). Couldnt afford to buy the books when they first came out, so I rented them from my college library. We read a chapter at a time before bed since I had alot of studies. It became a special ritual & the librarians were a big help letting me check out the books more than once to finish them. My medical program was demanding and they understood so gave us some leway. We would get a group of friends together and hang out all night until the newest book was ready to be sold(by then, I had graduated). I miss that, but we also had a good time seeing all the movies. Lines were long and getting seats together for our group was a challenge since the theaters were packed.Yep, thats the whole point of a scrapbook page...to bring back those fun moments.

Tatter-tot Casserole

Some one asked me for this recipe, so I decided to go ahead and post it. It's just a basic casserole, not much to it , but its one of my guys favorites for supper.

you will need:

* medium size package of hamburger

* 1 can (10 3/4 oz) cream of mushroom soup OR cream of chicken ( your choice ).

* shredded cheddar cheese

* one bag of tatter-tots ( I prefer the mini tatter-tots but use reg when I cant find them)

Directions:

* cook and drain hamburger & put drained hamb. in a 9X13 casserole pan

* add the can of creamed soup & mix well with the hamb. (might need to add just

a touch of water if youve used a larger amount of hamb.- helps the

is out the cream soup for all-over coverage)

* cover the whole thing with a single layer of tatter-tots following the baking directions on the back of the package for time & temp.
* after the tatter-tots are browned, cover the top with a layer with shredded cheddar cheese,put

back in the oven just until cheese is melted.

He is the cutest thing...the birds have been going crazy with the feeders on the front porch. Its not really visible in the picture, but he has a patch of red feathers right on top of his head. Maybe next time I try for a picture he'll let me get a little closer. I can see the feeders from my kitchen window and enjoy watching them when doing dishes and cooking. Next week is gonna get really cold...Im stocked up on suet cakes and ready for all my small feathery friends.

It was too funny, I opened the front door to put away the Christmas decorations before the bad weather hits and I swear about 20 small birds took flight. I almost peed my pants, I forgot that they were probably out there. They all waited in the branches of a near by tree for me to get done.

Christmas Eve

My daughter hosted Christmas Eve. She worked so hard & the food was wonderful! She made this ham that was to die for...and had homemade artichoke dip, Christmas cupcakes, punch, eggnogg cups rimmed with white chocolate and sprinkles, and lots of other goodies. She even handmade all her decorations!( the Fa La Laaa wall and the little Christmas trees...)

We all had a great time playing games & spending time with family. Thanks for such a great night sis:)

DIY Fancy Earbuds

Luv this idea for covering your earbud cords! It does help with tangling too. Used the same technique that was used to make these tribal necklaces . After endless searching for how to actually wrap it, I found this site honestlywtf.com . It has a great tutorial with pictures and directions. It wasnt hard, just a bit time consuming. I used the varigated purples (DMC thread),which used 2-3 skeins. I havent decided whether I want to do all the way up to my earbuds or n0t, so for now I just did the cord itself.

Special Ornaments

I received some very special ornaments today. My cousin sent me the nativity scene (top) which is made of coal from Kimball, WV., a natural resource in her area...and the candy cane was especially made for me by my nephew David. My favorite color is turquois....and the light on the tree reflects the colors perfectly! Good Job! I love them both! TY!

Christmas Past

I enjoy looking through old Christmas albums... seeing how those you love have grown & changed over the years, or remembering those that will be missed, but held close to your heart all year round.
Usually, I look through pictures of my kids, but last year I came across some pictures my mom had. This is one of my favorites. My cousin and I visiting the "Talking Christmas Tree" at the Bergner's Dept. store. We did this every year when we were kids. We'd attend the big Christmas parade downtown, go Christmas shopping,do lunch, go to all the big department stores and see the huge Christmas displays in the windows. The stores always used to try to out-do each other.
Now days, the big department store buildings are gone, along with most of the Christmas spirit.
I remember that I couldnt wait for the Christmas season to start. Baking cookies with mom in the kitchen, Christmas caroling, sending out cards, the church Christmas programs, ice-skating, wrapping presents, picking out the candy for our advent ribbons, lots of Christmas movies, school parties and dont forget the pot-lucks with friends. As I get older I appreciate the Christmas memories more and more every year. No matter how hard I try to bring those feelings of Christmas to my family every year it just doesnt seem to work. To much has changed.The simple things replaced with fast paced activities and grumpy shoppers. I miss the good ole days, but we have new traditions for our immediate family now and other Christmas activities to keep us busy during the season. Hopefully my kids will have good memories of their own in a new generation sort of way. Ones that will put a smile on their faces for years to come as they remember their own Christmas magic.
Remember those you love, be kind to those you dont and help others when possible.

Luv these! I havent made these yet , but now that most of my stitching is done I can play around with some fun stuff. I think these are very striking in a natural sort of way. Since these arent colored for the holidays they can be used throughout the whole winter as a decorative pick me up. The colors just seemed to catch my eye. Just think you could work up some of these on a bitter cold night, curled up by a warm fire, with a nice cuppa hot tea & some good company. Sounds amazing right? (sigh)

Christmas Biscornu

This Christmas Biscornu was made for a private cross stitch Christmas swap with my cousin Heidi. She saved a spot on her tree for my ornament , front & center...'cause of coarse, I called shot gun!

I really liked the pattern when I first saw it, but it does look pretty busy on paper. So I wasnt sure how it would look all finished. I luv it!! Looks like " Candy Canes & Christmas"! After my very trying and disastrous experience with the 15 sided biscornu project, this one turned out the way it was supposed to! Halleluya! I hope she likes the results as much as I do. Now I have to stitch another one up for me.

We were trying ,without success I might add, to get Olie to sit still for a Christmas picture. Our goal was to get him to sit on the stool next to the Christmas tree. Doesnt sound to complicated does it? What were we thinking? We were lucky he didnt knock it over, as his tail made it look like a wiggling dashboard ornament. So I had my son help and tried to bribe Olie with Peanut Butter on a spoon. One of his favorites. Olie got so excited his boy was giving him a treat all he could do was run around howling (and he's very fast)! LOL We had no idea taking a picture would end up being such an "I Love Lucy" moment. (In the last picture he finally got his PB.)

Knitting For Christmas

I am making a neckwarmer for my cousin this Christmas. The pattern stitch is featured in the book "Knit One Below". It took me a little bit to get in the rythem of the pattern, but after that, I am good as long as I'm paying attention lol. I do wish the stitches were a little tighter. Usually when knitting Im to tight but working with two yarns was another first for me. Im a little over half way finished and still have to figure out where to add the button holes. Hope she loves the colors, I like the color play of the pattern.

15 Sided Biscornu / Tutorial

This was my first attempt for a 15 sided biscornu, and I have to tell you, I found it rather difficult to sew together compared to the regular ones. Im guessing it gets easier with practice...(wink wink). Any hoo this was made for my friend/neighbor's upcoming birthday. All the individual squares turned out great, so Im hoping it pulls together nicely in the end. I found this tutorial on finishing a 15 sided biscornu as it can be some what confusing the first time.Im almost done...have the bottom layer to finish and sew on & then I can stuff and close it.

While I was sewing the small squares together, I noticed it was causing alot of fraying around the edges. So, I went around the very outside of each square with Fray Block ,dries clear, flexable & washable. That should do the trick. (It might have worked better for me if I did this step before sewing the pieces together.)

Finished it today, but it looks really rough around the edges to say the least and the points didnt turn out at all! Not exactly the look I was going for!! I had trouble getting it together through the whole project! At least I can say I gave this one a try, but from now on I think Ill stick with the regular biscornus.(Never Again!)

The full pattern for this is found in Mary Engelbreit's "Cross Stitch for All Seasons". I found a copy of her book at our local library. It has lots of great patterns, this book is a real gem.

This particular ATC was " lost" in the mail. My partner only received the front of the envelope!

She sent me a picture of what she received...the envie was even on all four sides like it had been opened with a letter opener, and it was sent as a parcel...no machines. Hmmm sounds like I made some one at the post office very happy! What a shame!

I havent been posting as often because I dropped my camera after vacation & havent had the time to replace it:( Working on it though...

Movie ATC / Sept.

I loved the idea of the movie theme for this month, but thought that patterns would be easier to find. I dug in the search for a pattern right away and three days later was ready to pull my hair out. After all that I had found only one pattern for a movie I totally love (Labyrinth) , but it had to be ordered --I wasnt sure it would get here in time for me to get it stitched up & I wasnt sure that the part of the pattern I wanted to use (David Bowie- The Goblin King) would fit on my card. Sooo, I was mulling over options with my stitchy cousin, Heidi , when it dawned on me that I had this Mary Poppins pattern all along!! Talk about a DUH moment. Any way I love this movie too so it all worked out.

This months theme was pirates. I found my pirate as a free pattern and found the ship in a book from the library that had cross stitch patterns from around the world. The ship was a Denmark pattern so thats also how I chose the colors for the star. Its going to be on its way to Portugal this time!

New Bathroom

Finally finished! This bathroom project started in March. The plumber and his contractors came, rebuilt the whole floor from the rafters on, replaced all the plumbing in the basement and then quit!
Left us with the new floor, a shower, and a toilet. No cabinets, sink or mirror--the rest of the room was empty.(All the new stuff was already ordered and on its way!) They told me that no one wants to do a small job. Well it wasnt small when they started it and they sure didnt charge me small either. Two months and two contractors later my bathroom is done. The second contractor agreed to take the job and just never called me back. The
third try was a charm-- he was a godsend!! It might not be HGTV material but we are thrilled with it! Still putting things away and waiting for art work to arrive, but its a good thing!

Landmarks ATC Received

This ATC was stitched for me by Donna Easton. "Angel of the North" located in Gateshead, England.
Its a contemporary sculpture designed by Anthony Gormley. Made of steel it stands 20 metres tall, & has a wing spand of 54 metres across. Its wings are angled forward 35 degrees to give it a sense of embrace. The sculpture was started in 1994 and finished in February of 1998.

Portable knitting projects

"Button-Down Alpaca-Wool Hat" featured in "Luxury Yarn One-Skein Wonders" Ive looked through tons of patterns this past winter and made lots of hats that dont quite look the best on me, but this one is great! Plain to go with every thing, doesnt squish my hair down or sqeeze my head!

Summer Shawl- tried this one on too and its really cute! Just the right weight.

Market Bag by Plymouth Yarns - this bag stretches out to hold alot of stuff ! Perfect for shopping. Bought the same brand of yarn but in blues and greens...

All these projects are on display at my favorite yarn store...got the stuff just need to get started.Im working on my cabled afghan while at home, but its getting to heavy to haul around with me, so I was looking for projects that are more portable. I like to knit on the go/in public as some call it, you'd be amazed at how much time you end up waiting for things....you can get more knitting done than you think;)

Straw Bale Gardening

After researching hay bale gardens on the internet, Ive decided I want to give it a try this summer. The photo above was great inspiration and had lots of directions to get started as well as tips. Im already looking for my bales so they will have time to "season" before my first plantings. (will need 2-3 weeks for this-- I also read that any bales will work except for pine.)
So far, Ive planned to plant zucchini, sweet bell peppers, spaghetti squash, banana peppers, eggplant, pineapple sage ( for the hummingbirds) & maybe a couple pumpkins. My biggest concern before starting this project is keeping the neighborhood animals out of the garden. We do live in town, but so do the raccoons (which enjoyed a smorgasboard of my tomatos last summer), possums and skunks. I cant wait, Im really looking forward to this experience and will post updated pictures as the garden progresses.

We were on a mission to find an antique door for our bathroom. It wasnt to be fancy,they just dont make the size we need anymore. My son managed to find the only fraternity paddle in the whole place, found a couple of things for Mother's Day (that will be posted later), laughed at some old kegs and weird things we had to figure out what they were....Needless to say we found every thing but the door. Not a waisted day though, we had a good time and went out to lunch! Better luck at the next place!

My daughter bought a nice looking cheap coffee table a few months ago, only to find out that it wasnt even real wood but ply board with a large wood-like sticker on top. It started peeling around the edges so we sanded it down and papercrafted/scrapbooked it, then had a piece of glass cut to fit the top. She luvs it & I think it turned out great!

Happy 90th Birthday

Today is my Gma's 90th Birthday! We did lunch and saw the bird sanctuary.

There's about 15-20 different types of finches and other small birds.

Too cute, alot of them were all cuddled up in their nests since its soooo cold here.

It was great and my Gma luvs birds & hot chocolate:)

Afghan Update

Finished the bottom edging and the first set of cables (24 rows)
and have started the second set. Its begining to take shape.
Its still on my circular needles so I couldnt lay it out flat for the picture.
Bella seems to be enjoying herself...she found the tale that
will be tucked in.

Vanilla Creme Shawl (Crochet)

I crocheted this shawl for my grandma to wear to church several years ago,

and had forgotten about it until I saw she had it on the other day.

The body is basic double crochet, the trim is one row of broomstick lace followed by

a row of single crochet & the fringe is single crocheted loops.

(The fringe was done on both ends and across the bottom).
Easy!

I used Baby Bee Lambie Pie yarn, color=naked (cream color).

Lionbrand Thick & Quick / Wheat Color #402

Getting ready to start on this pattern. Need to exhange needles first since I am using bulky yarn instead of chunky. I decided on Wool-Ease Thick & Quick color #402 Wheat. My guys are hard on things so I thought this had a better chance of survival:) Machine washable and dryable.

** ordered longer circular needles (US 13- 60"), but have finished the cast ons on the shorter ones till the new arrive.

Notes: Since I did choose a larger yarn the afghan is going to be much larger than the pattern calls for & of coarse will need more yarn. Im thinking it will probably cover a twin bed with no problem. Since I am keeping this one for me I dont mind changes. The Thick and Quick yarn is making this a very heavy and warm afghan...great for living up north.

Found this really great duffle bag and decided to embellish it. Ive always liked the chicken scratch embroidery patterns, but havent made any for ages. While I was searching through patterns, Ive noticed its come a long way since then. There are some really intricate patterns and lots of color play now days. I also learned another name for chicken scratch embroidery is Depression Lace. Hmmm learn some thing new every day!

Fun project...it took one evening and one skein.

I crocheted this loosely to get the slouchy look and changed the ribbing some.

This hat turned out really cute, but....you know the people that look good in any thing?

Well, it has come to my attention that I'm not one of them! So Im still searching through hat patterns:) This hat looks adorable on my daughter so it went to her.....she might end up with a whole collection before Im done!

All my Christmas shopping has been done and wrapped for at least a week! Ive had a great couple of days. Yesterday, my son and I spent the afternoon together, went to lunch and then on a whim stopped to play a couple games of pool and bowl. Today was coffee, kitties & Kelsey.

Who could resist these cookies with coffee, cinnamon and surrounded with chocolate bits?

2 teaspoons Folgers® Classic Instant Coffee Crystals
1 teaspoon hot water
1/2 cup Crisco® Butter Shortening
OR 1/2 stick Crisco® Butter Shortening Sticks
3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 large egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups Pillsbury BEST® All Purpose Flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup chocolate decorator bits
Preparation
Dissolve instant coffee in hot water. Beat shortening, brown sugar, egg, vanilla and coffee mixture in large bowl with electric mixer until light and fluffy. Mix in flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt.Divide dough into two equal parts. Shape each half into a roll 7-inches long x 1 1/2-inches in diameter. Roll in chocolate decorator bits, pressing lightly. Wrap tightly. Refrigerate at least 2 hours.Heat oven to 375ºF. Cut rolls into 1/4-inch slices. Place slices 1-inch apart on ungreased baking sheet.Bake 6-8 minutes or until set. Cool on rack.

I made this for my mom several years ago for our decoration day exchange
( she collects unusual santa ornaments--he was so cute I couldnt pass it up). Its always on Dec 1st, and its usually an ornament, but some times its a type of decoration with a Christmas theme.
We get the kids an ornament every year too and by the time they move out, they will have plenty for their first Christmas tree. Some how this became a tradition for us and its one that we all look forward too.

My-So-Called Scarf

I chose bright colors for this winter and plan on trying this with a solid color soon...

Have to say this herringbone stitch scarf is an eye catcher!
Im trying it with Classic Chunky Impressions yarn - color #6210 ( bulky ).
I know alot of people prefer wool and such, but I like the yarns that are washer and drier safe when possible. This yarn is so soft too!
If you look this up in search you will find an array of pictures and many color variations.
All of them look gorgeous!
